No Changes In Anthony Bennett's Recruiting Situation

Nov 30, 2011 8:59 PM

Canadian-born Anthony Bennett continues to consider various colleges and isn't expected to make a decision until the spring.

Bennett recently visited Kentucky and continues to consider UNLV, Florida, Washington, Ohio State, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Connecticut and Oregon.

“All [the] schools in my top nine are all calling me, but right now I’m just answering a few calls [and] just trying to stay focused in school,” said Bennett of how his recruitment is going. “Like I said before [I have] no favorites. I feel like all the schools are putting a lot of time and effort trying to recruit me to come to their school.”

Calhoun: Drummond Does Things That Are Special

Nov 28, 2011 2:15 AM

Jim Calhoun singled out Andre Drummond for his role in Connecticut's 78-76 win on Saturday over Florida State.

"I thought Andre Drummond established the game early for us, which really, really helped us. I heard some foolish things about what he was and wasn't after a game or two. He does things that are special. The reason I say that, he got tired down the stretch. When we went up seven, eight, nine points, they started avoiding the middle a little bit, all set up by those early blocks by Andre. Those two freshmen [Ryan Boatright and Drummond] really gave us a spark."

Drummond had modest numbers in his first two games, but has increased his productivity and consistency in the most recent five games.

Calhoun Likes What He Sees From Playing Oriakhi With Drummond

Nov 26, 2011 3:13 PM

Alex Oriakhi expressed some unhappiness over his relegation from the startline lineup on his twitter account after UConn's win over UNC Asheville Thursday night, but he responded with his best game of the season, with 14 points and 10 rebounds in 26 minutes in their loss to UCF.

Against UCF's big front line, Jim Calhoun played Oriakhi and Andre Drummond together for much of the game, and Drummond had 13 points and nine rebounds.

"Alex played better and Andre showed flashes of what he's going to be," Calhoun said, "otherwise, the game was a complete disaster."

UCF Alternated Between Zone, Man Defense To Confuse UConn In Upset

Nov 25, 2011 7:26 PM

Central Florida defeated Connecticut by a final score of 68-63 in the Battle 4 Atlantis semifinal on Friday. UCF was down 17 points with 16 minutes remaining in the second half.

The Knights used a zone defense after made baskets and man-to-man following misses to keep the UConn offense off balance. The Huskes went 2-for-18 on three-pointers.

“It was very effective,’’ Marcus Jordan said. “When we got in the huddle (down 17 at the 16-minute mark), we talked about winning every four-minute scrimmage from media timeout to media timeout. Our attitude was to go out and win every four minutes.’’

GM Prefers Jeremy Lamb Over Barnes

Nov 22, 2011 6:39 PM

Jeremy Lamb continues to emerge as one of the best prospects in the country.

Chad Ford has moved the Connecticut shooting guard to No. 10 on his Big Board.

One GM believes Lamb is the second best prospect of the 2012 NBA Draft class behind Anthony Davis.

"I think if you matchup Lamb with Harrison Barnes head-to-head, I think Lamb comes out ahead," said the GM. "He's a better athlete and he's just more aggressive."

Lamb’s usage has jumped from 23.25% as a freshman to 31.25% as a sophomore, but his TS% has also increased from 57.0% to 61.3%.

Barnes’ usage has increased slightly, going from 26.70% to 28.43%. His TS% has increased from 52.5% to 56.8% during the first three games of the 11-12 season.

Anthony Davis Separating From Rest Of 2012 Draft Class

Nov 22, 2011 6:32 PM

Anthony Davis continues to be atop Chad Ford's rankings for the 2012 NBA Draft.

Many NBA scouts feel there is a sizable gab between Davis and the whoever ends up being rated as the No. 2 player.

"Davis is the only person in this draft who I'm sure can change a franchise," one scout said. "I thought Andre Drummond may have also been ... but Davis is the only sure thing to me. He has such a unique game. He'll be a great pro."

Ford has Harrison Barnes ranked No. 2, followed by Drummond, Bradley Beal and Jared Sullinger.

Shabazz Napier Took Cues From Gibbs To Emerge As More Lethal Scorer

Nov 21, 2011 1:58 PM

Shabazz Napier had 22 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds in Connecticut's win over Coppin State.

Napier's breakout season as a sophomore has been a big positive for Connecticut. Napier is averaging 18 points, 6.2 assists and 6.0 rebounds per game.

Napier already had a strong reputation as a defensive player, but he is scoring more now from the point guard position.

Napier took a cue from watching Pitt's Ashton Gibbs at camps this summer.

"I know he's looked at as a scoring guard," Napier said after the win. "One thing he does so well is get everyone involved and also know when to score."
